Slavic. Russian. European. Remy. Virgin. Raw. 12A.

We see these words everywhere in the hair-extension industry.

But what do they actually mean?

After nearly 30 years of working with hair extensions, I believe stylists deserve more than impressive-sounding labels. They deserve to understand what they’re actually purchasing.

SLAVIC HAIR
Traditionally refers to hair sourced from donors in Eastern Europe and is known for its naturally finer texture. But “Slavic” alone is not a quality grade—and the label itself doesn’t tell you how the hair was sourced, processed or manufactured.

EUROPEAN / RUSSIAN HAIR
These terms may describe geographic origin, but they’re also sometimes used to describe a finer texture or particular feel. Origin and quality are two different things.

REMY HAIR
Remy traditionally means the hair has been kept in the same root-to-tip direction so the cuticles remain aligned. That’s important—but Remy alone doesn’t tell you the fiber diameter, how extensively the hair was processed, or how it will perform over time.

VIRGIN HAIR
Traditionally means hair that has never been chemically colored, bleached or altered. If hair has been chemically lightened and colored into an extension shade, ask what “virgin” is actually referring to.

RAW HAIR
Generally refers to minimally processed donor hair in its natural state. But like many terms in our industry, definitions can vary between suppliers.

There is no universal grading system that makes one manufacturer’s “12A” equivalent to another manufacturer’s “12A.”

So what SHOULD we be asking about?

Fiber diameter.
Cuticle integrity.
Cuticle alignment.
Chemical processing.
Density.
Consistency.
And most importantly—how the hair actually performs over time.

A geographic name doesn’t automatically make hair superior.

Fine hair isn’t automatically stronger hair.

And a higher “grade” printed on a package doesn’t automatically mean better hair.
